The utilization of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies in the workplace is becoming increasingly popular, but the implications for meaningful human work and the ethical considerations of these changes have yet to be fully explored. This concept paper sits at the intersection of the literature on meaningful work and ethical AI and provides a detailed evaluation of the ways in which deploying AI can improve or diminish employees' experiences of meaningful work. Meaningful work is defined as the perception that a person's work has value, meaning, or a higher purpose. To understand this concept, we must first explore the nature of meaningful work and rely on philosophical and business ethics stories to establish its ethical importance.
We then examined the impacts of three ways of deploying AI (replacing some tasks, “taking care of the machine” and amplifying human abilities) in five dimensions that constitute a holistic description of meaningful work and, finally, we evaluated the ethical implications.
